European Talent Cup title contender Hugo Millan, 14, killed  in Aragon accident

Up and coming young Spanish racer Hugo Millan dies in an accident at Aragon during the European Talent Cup he was in title contention for

A strong contender for the 2021 European Talent Cup - Hugo Millan - has died after succumbing to injuries sustained in a multi-rider accident during Round 8 of the season at Motorland Aragon.

Millan, aged 14, came down at Turn 5 in an incident that would see the race immediately red-flagged. Despite the efforts of the Medical Intervention team, he passed away in the medical centre a short time later. 

Though the European Talent Cup - which takes place on the Iberian-based CEV Repsol package, isn’t directly associated with Grand Prix competition, it is closely related through Dorna as its promoter and the FIM as the official governing body. 

As such, Millan’s death will be treated to the same scrutiny as that of Moto3 rider Jason Depasquier, who died in an accident during qualifying for the 2021 Italian MotoGP at Mugello.

"Following a serious incident in European Talent Cup Race One at the MotorLand Aragón Round of the FIM CEV Repsol, it is with great sadness that we report the passing of rider Hugo Millán.

"Millán was involved in a multi-rider incident at Turn 5, with the session immediately red flagged. The Medical Intervention Vehicles arrived at the site immediately and the rider was attended to on track before being transferred to the Medical Centre at the Circuit.

"Despite the best efforts of the circuit medical staff, the Medical Centre has announced that Millán has sadly succumbed to his injuries.

"Millán was enjoying his most successful season so far in the FIM CEV Repsol, claiming several podiums to demonstrate his consistency as he competed at the front of the class.

"The FIM, FIM Europe, Dorna and MotorLand Aragón Circuit pass on our deepest condolences to Millán’s family, friends, team and loved ones.

Who was Hugo Millan?

Despite his familiar Spanish origins, Millan was nonetheless considered at the forefront of the nation’s next wave of talented youngsters likely to move into the GP ranks as early as 2022.

Indeed, Millan led the European Talent Cup standings as recently as Round 5 and was certainly well in contention for the title at the time of his death with four podiums from the opening five races. He remains third in the standings following Round 8, with the paddock left only with imagining what could have been
