A voluntary blood bike group has been given a helping hand after being given two Kawasaki GTR1400s by a Wigan-based motorcycle dealership.

The bikes will now be used by the Devon Freewheelers to help them to deliver vital medicines, blood samples and medical equipment to isolated members of the public during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Kawasaki UK was at the heart of the gesture, contacting Motorcycle Centre Orrell (MCO) to see if they could help them to prepare and deliver the bikes to the Devon-based blood bike volunteers. Once the bikes were sourced, the staff at the MCO worked tirelessly to get the bike’s inspected and prepared prior to delivery. A task that the staff at the centre did in their own time and completely free of charge.

The bikes will now be put to good use straight away, having already been tricked out in blood bike decals, ready to help the team save lives at this difficult time. Aside from speeding lifesaving blood around the Devon area, the bike will also be used to deliver COVID-19 testing kits to NHS staff who are self-isolating during the crisis. This could allow some NHS key workers to quickly diagnose themselves as clear from the virus, allowing them to get back to work and help out on the frontline.

Dealership principle, David Brown, spoke to Wigan Today regarding the herculean effort by himself and his team:

“The country is in a crisis and we all wanted to do our bit if we could do. Contacting a bike dealership 200 plus miles away might raise an eyebrow or two but we would like to think that tells its own story about the standard of service we offer.

“Steve was in the workshop, Rod upstairs in the service reception while I was at my desk on the showroom floor throughout, so we maintained the social distancing.

“Getting the bikes to essential key workers in desperate times was the objective and members of our team happily volunteered their time to get the bikes ready.”
