Marc Marquez: We followed doctors’ advice, time to focus on 100%

Marc Marquez explains why he will likely sit out the remainder of the 2020 MotoGP season as he continues his recovery from injury

Marc Marquez has given more details into his decision to focus on returning to full fitness after Honda confirmed he is set to miss the next two to three months recovering from his injury.

The Spaniard has been out of action since the second round of the 2020 MotoGP World Championship season when he attempted to compete just days after undergoing surgery on the arm he fractured during the closing stages of the Jerez opener a week earlier.

However, when it was discovered the titanium plate that had been inserted into his arm had been damaged, a second operation was necessary to fix the issue. As a result, Marquez was forced to sit out the most recent triple-header, even if there was hope he’d be back in action at Misano next month prior to the most recent announcement.

Speaking in an interview with Spanish broadcaster DAZN, Marquez says he followed the advice available to him when he returned to action so soon after surgery, but the latest complication ultimately sets him back to the extent he will cede his World Championship title.

“It’s hard to watch MotoGP from the sofa and I would like to be there, but in the career of athletes we take a lot of risk and it’s normal,” he said. “It is my eighth season in MotoGP, taking risks to achieve goals and unfortunately this strange season has been difficult for me because of the injury.

“The first time I am following what the doctors said to me and gave me the confidence to ride the bike, do some gym because the plate was strong enough, so I did what they recommended.

“Now I will do the same, I will follow their recommendation and they say it is much better to stay calm, pass this month, fix well. It is the right arm and I struggled in the winter with the shoulder, so now it is time to put everything in the correct way and come back 100%.”
