Vinales sets the pace from Marquez and Rossi as lap times tumble during FP2 for the Austin MotoGP at COTA.
Rain is forecast for Saturday, prompting soft-tyre time attacks in the closing stages to try and claim a place in the top ten for direct access to Qualifying 2.
Dovizioso, Petrucci and Lorenzo were among those to miss out as all riders set their best times of the day in FP2.
Marquez, who has won on all six of MotoGP's previous visits to COTA and was fastest before soft tyres appeared, tried a Ducati-style tyre cooler during FP2.
