Pole sitter Josh Brookes has started race day as he means to go on by setting the pace in morning warm-up ahead of round two for the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Oulton Park.

The Australian rider has been in dominant form around the Cheshire circuit this weekend and begins race one later today from the top spot after going 0.7s quicker than his closest rival in qualifying.

With morning conditions throwing up a challenge thanks to a combination of overnight rain and diesel contamination – which forced the cancellation of several sessions prior to BSB warm-up – Brookes was more than 13secs off his pole time but half a second clear of Christian Iddon in second.

Eager to bounce back from a dismal qualifying session on the Honda, Andrew Irwin was third quickest, ahead of Danny Buchan and front row starter Peter Hickman.

Joint championship leader Tarran Mackenzie led the Yamaha charge in sixth, from James Ellison, Dan Linfoot, top Suzuki rider Bradley Ray and Matt Truelove, the latter – along with Scott Redding – suffering a tumble in the tricky conditions.

Race one takes place today at 13.30, with race two following at 16.309
