Updated Euro 5 2022 Honda Monkey announced for UK market

The Honda Monkey is back with a 2022 revision that sees it gain an extra gear, new Euro 5 engine and revised suspension

Monkey 125 rejoins EU market

THE Honda Monkey has gained updates for the MY2022 edition of the hugely successful and likeable 125cc machine.

Originally devised as a theme park attraction to get kids riding motorcycles in the 1970s, the original bike quickly went from sideshow attraction to a much-loved production model in next to no time. The legacy of the bike never went away, and in 2018 Honda took the step of reintroducing the machine for the mass market.

Lightweight, super-accessible, and eminently cute, the modern-day Monkey is more than just a plaything, offering city dwellers an affordable, agile and good looking form urban transport.

What’s new for the MY2022 Honda Monkey

The engine of the new 2022 Honda Monkey is all-new and is shared across this and the more modern Grom – another bike in the Honda miniature motorcycle range. The two-valve 124cc unit features a 50mm bore and 63.1mm stroke and produces peak power of 6.9kW (9.2bhp) at 6,750rpm. Peak torque is 11Nm (8.1lb-ft) and is produced at 5,500rpm.

To improve delivery, the intake, airbox, and exhaust have been redesigned, while the catalyser set-up is new on this model to aid cleaner emissions. The exhaust is now a single chamber system (previously three-chamber) to aid performance and also the exhaust note.

Good news for riders who use their bike in the real world, the 2022 Honda Monkey is now equipped with a five-speed gearbox, boasting its cruising speed and fuel economy – top speed in 56mph.

The engine now features more advanced internals that includes low-friction coatings, offset cylinder and roller-rocker valve gear. This, and the improvements to the intake, exhaust and fuel injection, should mean the 2022 Honda Monkey is able to return economy figures of over 150mpg. Given the bike’s 5.6-litre fuel tank, that should give the Monkey a theoretical range of around 200-miles!

The chassis of the bike has also been improved for this year, with two-stage springs not featured on the twin-shock rear end. The change is said to improve the ride quality on bumpy roads and provide the bike with 102mm of travel and a ground clearance of 175mm.

2022 Honda Monkey price, colours, and availability

Riders looking to Monkey around in 2022 are able to do so from August 2021 when it is hoped the bike will be landing in UK dealerships. The bike is priced at £3,899 and will be available in three colours, new for 2022 Pearl Glittering Blue (above), Banana Yellow, and Pearl Nebula Red.
