A driver with no insurance or licence has been jailed for four and half years after killing an OAP motorcyclist in crash

Roads policing review announced

MACAULAY Skirrow from Deal in Kent has been jailed for four and a half years after admitting to killing a pensioner while driving dangerously.

Uninsured and unlicenced Skirrow, 24 of Freemans Way Deal, pleaded guilty to causing the death of motorcyclists Bernard Tomlin in July this year. Mr Tomlin was riding his motorcycle towards a crossroads with Mongeham Road at around 12:45 when the collision with Skirrow’s red Peugeot 106 occurred.

Kent Online reports that an air ambulance was called to the scene at the time, although Mr Tomlin was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Speaking after sentencing, Detective Constable Bob Fursey of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said:

"Skirrow’s decision to ignore the give way sign at the crossroads and to overtake another vehicle that was waiting for the motorbike to pass the junction cost a man his life.

"Not only that, Skirrow was not insured and he did not even hold a licence to drive the vehicle.

"His actions were disgraceful and while no sentence will ever be able to compensate the family for their loss, I hope that it will at least bring some closure for them at this difficult time."

The court heard that Skirrow had suffered from mental health problems after the crash and had prior to this been battling with drug addiction and abuse.
