FOR many motorcycle collectors, a low-mileage homologation special is the cherry on top of any group of desirable bikes. The only thing that can really top that is an as-new, still in its crate example of an iconic machine – a bit like this NoS Kawasaki Ninja ZX-7R K2.

UPDATE! | SOLD SOLD SOLD!

If you wanted it and didn't bid on it - you're too late! The Kawasaki ZX-7R K2 has now been sold to an unknown buyer for $65,400 (or £48,756.03)!! According to Motorrad.de, the bidding war began at around £40,000, with the two potential buyers slugging it out until the final bell! All in all, more than 70 bids were placed, although it was only the bids made by the final two buyers that really counted.

Up for grabs on the specialist auction website, Iconic Motorbike Auctions, the sale represents the chance to own the highly desirable “K” model of the ZX-7R. The bike was specifically produced between 91-92, allowing Kawasaki to enter the AMA Superbike championship.

Over and above the standard ZX-7R, the K2 features an engine that was breathed on by Kawasaki’s race engineers, boasting around 120bhp, a close-ratio gearbox, and Keihin 39mm flat slide carburettors. The bike also features a lightweight aluminium fuel tank, and a lighter-than-stock sub-frame complete with a racing single seat. The chassis of the bike features fully adjustable suspension complete with remote reservoir rear shock and full adjustability.

For the anoraks out there, a neat trick to tell a homologation special of the ZX-R7 apart from a stocker is by looking for the small, rounded hole in the side-fairing of the bike. Its purpose was to allow the adjustment of the Keihin flat slide carb’s. The stock road bike and its regular CV items had no adjustment needed, so therefore no hole.

To be honest though, all of the above is pretty much irrelevant to the future owner. The chances of this bike ever finding its way out of that crate and onto the road are about as slim as me landing a ride in the MotoGP championship!
