Bonneville Speed Week cancelled due to flooding

Standing water on Salt Flats forces organisers to cancel event

THE Bonneville Speed Week has been cancelled due to large amounts of standing water on Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats.

This year marks the 100th anniversary celebration of land speed racing on the Salt Flats but the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) has had to cancel the event.

A spokesperson for the SCTA said: ‘The SCTA Board is currently on the salt, and has determined that the standing water will not dry in time for us to hold our annual Speed Week event.

‘The Board is also discussing the possibility of extending our next event - ?World Finals (Sep 30 - Oct 3) into a full week of racing as a sort of delayed Speed Week.’

Assuming the speedway does dry out in time for upcoming events, the condition of the salt after such severe flooding is still a concern to racers.
