Casey Stoner, Cal Crutchlow, Bradley Smith, and the current BSB SSP 600 champion Rory Skinner all cut their teeth in the cut and thrust world of the budget lightweight class. With a focus on the rider and not the machine, the championship had a knack of sniffing out talent before they’d even sampled the delights of cheap beer and cigarettes.
And Aprilia is looking to do it all over again, although it’s not pinning its hopes on a screaming GP replica two-stroke. This time they are going big-bore with the RS660 being the machine of choice for not one but two one-make championships.
To start with the racing is one taking place in the firm’s homeland, although if it happens anywhere this year they are doing well! The events will follow the 2021 CIV season, and the two classes on offer cater for clubman and more professional teams.
The first ‘all-inclusive’ offering is for folk who just want to arrive and ride, with fixed costs for the season and all the bikes owned and managed by Aprilia’s racing department. The bikes will be assigned by way of a Pro-Am-style lottery too, meaning it should even the stakes up a bit.
The second option is more aimed at teams who wish to get elbow deep in the game, allowing ‘papa’ to live out his team manager fantasies while junior slogs it round the track. Mum’s probably making the spaghetti in the motorhome. The teams in this championship will actually own the bike, tune the bike and fix it when it inevitably gets dropped.
The series will be taking in six races covering Misano (x2), Imola, Mugello, and Vellalunga.
