This beautiful and possibly unique MotoGP machine smashed its auction estimate

The ex-Hayden Desmosedici GP8, sourced directly from the Ducati factory in dismantled form, has now crossed the block and found a new home for a hefty sum.

A stunning, and quite possibly unique, Ducati Desmosedici GP8 has now been sold at auction — with the ex-Nicky Hayden “stars and stripes” edition achieving an impressive $288,000 USD at the RM Sotheby’s Monterey sale.

The bike, which went under the hammer on Saturday, August 16, was offered in fully assembled but “show bike configuration.” While not currently a runner, the listing confirmed that the machine could be recommissioned for track use should the new owner wish to experience it in anger once again.

Historically, this GP8 holds a special place in modern MotoGP history. It was the first Ducati MotoGP bike that Hayden tested after his switch from Honda, taking to the track at the end-of-season test. Due to contractual obligations with outgoing sponsors, the bike couldn’t wear the usual Ducati livery, leading instead to its distinctive and patriotic red, white, and blue “stars and stripes” paint scheme.

Further touches link the bike back to Hayden himself, with numerous labels and stickers on the frame, rims, and brake lines marked with the letters “NH,” denoting them as items used by the 2006 MotoGP World Champion.

The frame is a genuine 2008 Ducati item, paired with new and unused engine casings and crankcases. The catalogue noted that the bulk of the work required to return it to running order would likely centre around the engine — though, for many collectors, the machine’s value lies in its historical provenance rather than its rideability.

With links to one of America’s most beloved modern-era MotoGP racers and the exclusivity of being one of very few privately held GP8s, expectations were always high. Pre-sale estimates ranged between £165,000 and £240,000, but in the end, the hammer price of $288,000 USD (around £213,000) showing just how highly collectors value this piece of MotoGP history.
