WE RIDE LONDON is planning a ULEZ protest ride tomorrow, to coincide with the London Mayor’s last day of public consultation on the new charges.
The action group has been campaigning against the rise since the new pollution charges were first announced. Under the new rules, which are due to be implemented in April 2019, owners of motorcycles that do not meet Euro 3 standards – i.e. those registered before 2007 – will be charged £12.50 each day that they ride in central London.
If this charge is not paid, riders will be fined £130 (reduced to £65 if paid within 14 days). The only good news is that bikes with an historic tax class will be exempt from the charge altogether.
Up to 60 bikers are expected to join tomorrow's ride, which starts at Regents Park at 4:30pm, travelling via Trafalgar Square to Parliament Square, where the group will loop for a while before unfurling a banner.
A spokesperson for We Ride London commented: ‘The 28th of Feb marks the last day of the latest consultation on the introduction of the ULEZ charge which will impact most of the motorcyclists and scooters in London, forcing them to pay £12.50 per day to ride into and around our capital city.
‘We Ride London is campaigning against this unfair and counter-intuitive tax. Motorcycles & Scooters are part of the solution to reducing pollution, congestion and overcrowding but we continue to be ignored by the Mayor and will continue to ride in protest and awareness until our voice is heard.
‘We encourage all riders to join in on Wednesday, meeting at 4:30PM on the Outer Circle in Regents Park.'
