Mo’cycle motorcycle airbag jeans set to launch this year

Extending the protection offered when riding your motorcycle, Mo’cycle Airbag Jeans help to protect your upper legs in a crash

MOTORCYCLE airbag protection has been around for a number of years now, with widespread use in high-level motorcycle racing becoming the norm in the early 2000s.

Surprisingly though, the technology has been around much longer than that, with a Hungarian inventor called Tamas Straub first dabbling with the idea in the 1970s.

Since then, motorcycle airbags have gone super high-tech. With advanced algorithms replacing mechanical firing systems (in most cases), and the inevitable switch from race-only use to more widespread acceptance.

One area that seems to have flown under the safety radar, quite literally in this case, is lower body protection. Most airbag systems focus on the shoulders, neck, and back of the rider. The simple reason is that these are high-risk impact areas that if injured, can side-line a racer for weeks and months on end.

Now though, a Swedish company is looking to boost rider protection, with what could be the first commercially available motorcycle airbag jeans to hit the market.

Before and after inflation of the Mo'cycle airbag jeans

The story of the Mo’cycle airbag jeans begins in 2016 when after spending years developing and making some of the first commercially available motorcycle jeans on the market, the firm first applied for the patent on the technology. From there the system was crash tested and approved in 2021 before seemingly being close to hitting the market in early 2022.

The system is fired by a mechanical tether that detects when the rider has been ejected from their bike, releasing the gas from an in-built CO2 cannister and inflating the protective components. The outer of the jeans are made with UHMWPE fibres, something the makers claim is 17x stronger and 8x lighter than steel.

The Mo’cycle airbag jeans are not quite on the shelves yet, as the firm is counting down the day until they launch officially. To stay up to date, head over to:
