The UK Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) has announced a new demand relating to motorcycle parking that will be a part of the group’s campaign to take place after the upcoming PCC (police and crime commissioner) and Mayoral elections, which are set to take place in May.

The demand from MAG is described by the group as “bold but completely practical,” and requests that motorcyclists be allowed “waiting time”, when parking on-street, “regardless of urban parking restrictions.”

MAG says that motorcycle riders should be allowed up to 15 minutes of waiting time when parked parallel to the kerb “so as to not obstruct traffic”, regardless of any parking restrictions in the location the vehicle is parked. MAG refers to double-yellow lines as one such restriction, and says that the policy should be implemented for all non-motorway roads where on-street parking isn’t “specifically prohibited by notice”.

The demand from MAG is primarily aimed at delivery drivers and couriers, who the group says are “vital” to urban economies but are “unfairly targeted” by parking restrictions.

MAG Chairman, Neil Liversidge, said: “There is a strong case to allow a short waiting time for bikers where parking is otherwise restricted. Without delivery riders there would be tens of thousands of extra journeys in the urban environment due to people fetching their own parcels and takeaway food. It’s a hard life being a courier and they deserve a fairer deal, instead of being targeted for easy money with expensive traffic tickets.”
