The AJS Imber is a featherlight step-through scooter with rugged off-road aspirations.

I few years ago, Honda revealed a lightweight adventure scooter that looked like a C90 that had completed its commando training. That bike was the Hunter Cub, also called the CT125, although Honda only officially released the model in certain regions.
Sadly, the UK didn’t make the cut, meaning we missed out on what looked like a nailed-on fun-factory in small capacity form.
There is an answer, though, and it doesn’t involve importing one from Japan or buying an already imported model. It begins with the storied British bike maker AJS, which carries a range of retros, cafe racers, cruisers and scooters. One bike, though, stands alone in the range, the Imber. Paint it bright yellow and slap some Honda stickers on it, and you could well be looking at Honda’s little off-roader.

Power for the Imber comes from a 125cc single-cylinder engine, which pumps out 9.2bhp at 8,000rpm. Sticking to the concept of the CT125, the transmission of the bike is a clutchless four-speed manual gearbox mated to a centrifugal clutch - AKA ‘crash gears’. The system means you can kick the bike into gear at a standstill, with the centrifugal clutch engaging as the engine revs rise. When you want to come to a stop, just pull up in any gear and the engine will simply tickover until the throttle is opened again.

It’s a handy and incredibly simple system, and one that helped to make the C90 one of the best-selling bikes of all time. It should also make the Imber easier to ride off-road, thanks to the fact that the engine is basically impossible to stall.
The chassis spec of the bike is simple but seems to be rugged enough to handle some light off-road trails. Best of all, though, is the weight of the bike, which tips the scales at just 115kg.
