A motorcycle thief has been jailed for 21-months, despite his plea to be spared jail claiming he 'would not being able to provide for his family financially if jailed.’
The news follows the arrest of Jacek Czarnota’s, of Broadlands Road Southampton, who was caught by police after they tracked a stolen Ducati worth an estimated £10,000 to his address. Czarnota was seemingly unaware of the tracker being fitted to the bike, and after a police helicopter was launched to follow his van officers swooped in.
On searching his property, police found another quad bike and stolen spares, and the Ducati which is reported to have extensive damage in the region of £4,000. The Ducati was found in the back a Ford Transit van that was also found at the property, it was also without registration plates – although there is no word on the status of that vehicle
Appearing at Southampton Crown Court, Czarnota was charged with two counts of handling stolen goods to which he eventually pleaded guilty.
He also admitted breaching a suspended sentence order which he had been given for a previous burglary offence.
Defending, Jodie Mittell argued for a suspended sentence to be imposed, voicing Czarnota’s concerns about not being able to provide for his family financially if jailed. Ms Mittell also mentioned prison conditions during the covid crisis.
Mr Recorder Nicholas Medcroft QC jailed him for 21 months.
Despite the plea, he will serve the 21 months and then be released on licence and be back on the streets.
