First Look: The Dutch turbo-diesel motorcycle
Say hello to the 'Track' - not cheap but definitely worth a look
CVA turbo diesel...sounds good to us
|
DUTCH MANUFACTURER E.V.A. has released its latest version of the company's turbo-diesel motorcycle, complete with constant variable transmission (CVT).
Costing EUR 17,500 the Track T-800 CDI features an adjustable front wheel hydraulic drive system, delivering power from a 50 bhp in-line three cylinder turbocharged and intercooled diesel, which slugs out a claimed 130Nm of torque from 1800 rpm upwards. CVT (Constantly Variable Transmission) helps maximise fuel efficiency.
Is this the next big thing for everyday motorcycling? We think so.

You're looking at a different bike to me. Insanity, 50 bhp is 50bhp, no matter how you dress it up.

Not so..its where and how it makes it that counts...50bhp in a light enough chassis with plenty of torque could be a winning combination...
and despite the ravages of time on your memory there is more chance my bed making 50bhp than any Fizzie ever produced

Blimey 130Nm of torque!! Maybe it really does need the 2WD system?

50bhp is more than any bike I've got so I'm well impressed with it.

Have a look at http://www.dieselmotorcycle.co.uk/dieselmotorcycle_tech_info1.htm being a diesel it will not rev. Its working range is 850-4500 with "130Nm 50HP range for maximum performance at 1800-2800rpm". Low reving but full of torque, old skule. Remember torque=acceleration power=top speed.

Aye, torque matters more to me than bhp, hmm...4500rpm??? fucks sake, I know diesel are slow revving, but you're gonna be shifting a hell of a lot quicker Its a cvt bike , no gears to feck about with ...
i have to say i want one, looks great , it aint gonna be light tho . its a 800cc tripple , so yea dog slow comes to mind , 100mph max i bet , but thats missing the point if your worried about top speed the turbo is only running 1.25bar easily crank it up for more go ... more details http://www.dieselmotorcycles.eu/ under the technik bit theres lots of "adjustable by ecu" so looks like it could go a bit more

pros 1,000,000 mpg and able to tow a trailer cons weighing, smelling and sounding like a tractor

There has to be a first one out of the box ... And this is it ... It's a try the water's time ... If it take's off I can see other's coming along and trying the same idea ... Not every one is looking for a warp speed star ship ... Put that engine in something like a Bandit and I can see it selling ... John933

Isn't CVT 'Continuously' variable transmission, not the 'Constantly' variable as quoted (twice) in the article? Or a meringue? (Or am I wrong - old scottish joke) -- Kaideejee

But you don't expect bike journalists to actually know anything about what they write do you? (It's not the 'first look' either I mentioned it on here in 2006. )

Great economical bike for round the world travel or riders in large countries who cover big distances. I might trade my Beemer GS on one. This bike looks lighter, more compact ,has good ground clearance and that torque would be great in sand or mud. For the " I've got one bigger and faster than your's " boy's, this bike won't suit. It would weaken thier manhood and damage thier poser image with a mere 50bhp. With no high performance bragging rights , how could they show thier faces in public on something like this?

I have a milley factory with 134 bhp at the wheel. Its bloody furious to ride and I've spent a lot on her getting her right. I also have a pegaso, which is 40 fart bhp. There is no comparison between the two, one is outright bonkers, wheelies, turns quick and tight and the other is sheer joy to sit in a comfortable arm chair type style. The peg goes, gets me to and from work just as quick as the mille and to be honest I have actually had more fun on it than the mille. 40 bhp, thats all, single thumper, nothing specail, top box, and bloody comfortable. This deisel, with its 50BHP and rocket ship torque, if this was cheap enough I'd have one...imagine the fuel economy, in the hundreds......fantastic. Put the right tyres on it, you'll have fun....load it with luggage, it wont be a slouch....put your missus on the back....300 miles easy, comfortably and it still wont be a slouch. I've been waiting for a decent run of deisel bikes to show up. As commuters and tourers its what we need. We do not need another 35 MPG ducati hypermotard, or the 33 MPG KTM adventurer........we tour for the love of riding, we commute to keep the costs done......in the right development, one of these 'smokers' will blow all competition away....I cant wait. What about my milley? Well, thats still bonkers, and when I want to go bonkers, I blow off the dust, crank her up and go scare old grannies........

Around 110 mpg. The engine is from Smart. I've been waiting for a decent run of deisel bikes to show up. As commuters and tourers its what we need. I quite agree but the basic bike costs 17,500€ - @£14500! Do the calculations - you'll have to go a long way to make that an economic proposition.

Until diesel bikes come down to a more affordable price, I can't see them being more popular. At the moment I use my missus' NTV650, and get 60mpg, slim enough to nip through city traffic, and comfy as you like. It even handles quite well. And it was £900!

They are not overly popular now are they? Trouble is you have small (underfunded) businesses who cannot make the product at a low enough price for much more than the devoted enthusiast market can bear and several large concerns who make a good living selling the same old shite year after year..... At the moment I use my missus' NTV650, and get 60mpg, slim enough to nip through city traffic, and comfy as you like. It even handles quite well. And it was £900!
60mpg? You must ride very gently. I could never get them to better 50ish.
How much do you imagine it would really cost if it was made in Europe and sold as new?
