It's amazing to think how far tech has come in the past 10 or 15 years, particularly with mobile phones. They've gone from being a useful emergency replacement for a phone box (ask your dad), to a nexus of communication, navigation and enterainment. Like most folk, I use my iPhone for music, radio, emails, messaging, and GPS navigation. Now that all works a treat in the car – but it's less useful on the bike of course.
Unless you have one of these chappies. The SW Motech phone holder is a totally waterproof, impact-resistant hard plastic case, with a clear, touch-screen compatible front, and a quick-release mount system. I've been using it on a load of bikes for the past couple of years, and it's transformed my biking life. Coupled with some earphones and a charging cable into the bike, I can listen to my crap tunes or Radio 4 propaganda on longer trips, while getting Google Maps navigation. If you get a pair of gloves with a touchscreen finger, you can operate the phone super-easily inside the holder, and it's a tough, well-made piece of kit.
As it comes, you need to add a mounting solution, to connect the backplate to your bike. MotoHaus sells a few optional mount setups, for different bikes. But I've attached it to a RAM mount ball, so I can use it on a variety of different mountings. I have a brake master cylinder mount on my Burgman 650, and have a range of handlebar mounts for when I ride test bikes.
It’s a bit on the pricey side at £55 but is a very well designed bit of kit all round. Also available for most other iPhones, and various other Samsung Galaxy models.
