Rookie Irwin takes momentous North West 200 maiden win

Superbike rookie Glenn Irwin has claimed a historic maiden victory at the North West 200

Superbike rookie Glenn Irwin has claimed a historic maiden victory at the North West 200 by fighting off Tyco BMW duo Alastair Seeley and Ian Hutchinson over the seven lap race.

Having led for the majority of the race, Irwin was never given a breather from the battling Tyco BMWs but kept his Ducati in front on the coast road on the final lap to clinch victory by 0.172s.

Irwin grabbed the holeshot on the Be Wiser Ducati to sprint into an early lead only to be reeled in by Hutchinson and as the pair tussled it let Seeley, Michael Rutter and Michael Dunlop re-enter the fray for victory.

In the final lap Irwin and Seeley edged ahead and despite the 21-time NW200 winner having a scary moment running on to the grass at University he nipped into the lead when a backmarker came into play. But Irwin gritted through the final sprint to get excellent drive out of Black Hill to clinch a memorable victory.

With Seeley in second, Hutchinson made it a double Tyco BMW podium in third ahead of Dunlop and Rutter, with Dean Harrison sixth from Martin Jessopp, Peter Hickman and Williams Dunlop.
