Rossi set for early return to MotoGP

MotoGP champion to test R1 road bike later this week

INJURED MOTOGP World Champion Valentino Rossi is to test a Yamaha YZF-R1 road bike at Misano later this week, after doctors revealed the Italian's broken leg was healing faster than expected.

Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport claims the latest development could see Rossi return to racing as early as the Sachsenring race on 18 July.

MotoGP doctor Claudio Costa, who was instumental in the surgery performed on the nine-time world champion, says the tactics have paid off for the flambouyant Italian and his Fiat Yamaha crew.

"Going a certain path wasn't to make him race at all costs, but it was for making him heal well quickly. The operation, done by inserting only four screws that fix the big pin in a particular way, was done to allow him to walk as soon as possible, despite the bone not being fully healed."

However, Dr Costa warned another crash could prove serious for Rossi's existing injury.
