MotoGP switches to 1000cc in 2012

FIM announce return to big-bore racing as we say goodbye to 800cc

FOLLOWING MONTHS of speculation, the FIM has announced the blue riband racing class is to return to 1,000cc in 2012.

The move was announced by the International Motorcycling Federation said after meeting rights holders Dorna in Switzerland.

"At the beginning of next year we will produce the new rules in a more complete format but that is the basis; 2012 will be the year of a new era of MotoGP," said FIM president Vito Ippolito.

The move will come as welcome news to many racers and fans alike; the switch from 990cc to 800cc in 2006 was recently described by nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi as 'the biggest mistake in the last 15 years'.
