De Puniet undergoes surgery

LCR Honda man treated after breaking lower left leg in crash at Sachsenring

RANDY de Puniet has been diagnosed with fractures to his left lower leg following a high-speed crash at Sunday's German MotoGP from the Sachsenring.

The LCR Honda rider, already riding injured following a crash in qualifying,  suffered a highside on the exit of turn 4 while lying ninth in the race. De Puniet's Honda RC212V, left sticken mid-corner following the crash, took down fellow competitors Aleix Espargaro and Alvaro Bautista. Pramac Ducati man Mika Kallio struck the Frenchman's left leg, causing fractures to de Puniet's left tibia and fibula.

The race was immediately red flagged.

De Puniet was airlifted to Hartmannsdorf hospital where he underwent surgery Sunday evening to insert a pin in his left leg.

De Puniet: “It can’t be worse than this! I took a bad start from the third row but I was back to ninth and my race pace was pretty good. I could push for the sixth place despite my painful ankle after yesterday’s crash in the qualifying. Suddenly I crashed at exit of turn 4 and one bike hit my left leg. I immediately realised that it was something serious and after the X-ray we discovered the truth”.
