Austin MotoGP test times - Day 1

The first day of unofficial testing at new circuit COTA yields some interesting results

ROOKIE Marc Marquez of Repsol Honda has set the fastest time on the first day of testing in Austin, Texas.

Repsol Honda, LCR Honda and the Factory Yamaha team are all involved in the three day private test at the recently-opened Circuit of the Americas.

A new course, COTA hosted an exciting Formula One Grand Prix in November of last year - it will join Laguna Seca and Indianapolis as the third US circuit in the MotoGP calendar for 2013.

On just his eleventh ride out on the RC213V, Marquez impressed as the day drew on - as the track warmed up, times improved, leaving the young Spaniard as fastest rider at the end of the first day. He said: 'The first day in Austin went pretty well. It is a fun circuit, because there's not a single bump on the track. There was no grip at the start and we were sliding around a lot, but gradually the lines were cleaned up and we could tackle it better.

'In the first part of the track, where the flowing chicanes are all linked up, it is a very tricky section. It is a physically demanding part of the circuit where you have to use a lot of strength to change direction quickly. It is definitely a key point of the track.

'There are three right-handers later on, all linked together, making it hard to find the ideal line. We are finding our way steadily though. Today was all about learning those lines, rather than trying out too many things with the bike.'

Final times at the end of Day 1

1. Marc Marquez ESP Repsol Honda (RC213V) 2m 5.620s
2. Dani Pedrosa ESP Repsol Honda (RC213V) 2m 6.140s

4. Jorge Lorenzo ESP Yamaha Factory (YZR-M1) 2m 7.388s
5. Valentino Rossi ITA Yamaha Factory (YZR-M1) 2m 7.924s

The final official MotoGP test will be held at Jerez later in the month, testing in Austin continues at 10am on Wednesday.
