MotoGP: Laguna Seca results

Run of the mill race with plenty of retirements

CASEY STONER took one step closer to clinching this year's MotoGP crown by winning the US Grand Prix at Laguna Seca.

The Australian snatched the lead off Honda's Dani Pedrosa in the opening stages and never looked back, putting in a flawless display from start to finish. His fellow countryman Chris Vermulen clinched an impressive second for Rizla Suzuki. Third place, and probably the gutsiest ride of the day, went to Marco Melandri, who was riding injured after a high-speed collision yesterday. Valentino Rossi fought hard to take fourth place at the chequered flag.

Reigning world champion Nicky Hayden and Suzuki's John Hopkins collided at turn one on the opening lap. Hopkins finished 15th and Hayden retired later in the race. Nicky's brother, Roger Lee, finished an impressive ninth for Kawasaki on his Moto GP debut.

Britain's Chaz Davies, also on his debut, looked promising for a top ten finish but was hampered by mechanical problems with the Pramac Ducati. He ended the race 16th.
