Marc Marquez wins Superprestigio 2016

Marquez brushes off Toni Elias and Brad Baker to bask in glory in Barcelona

Marc Marquez Superprestigio 2016

MARC MARQUEZ has capped off a stellar year by claiming victory in last weekend's Superprestigio final ahead of Toni Elias and Brad Baker at this year’s event in Barcelona.

Marquez won each of the final four heats in the Superprestigio category and looked good for the Superfinal – although it remained to be seen whether he was going to beat American Brad Baker – the overall winner of the three Open class final races and last year’s victor. However, after Marquez hit the final bend of the first lap, he began to stamp his authority on the race and maintained a firm grip on the lead to finish 0.7 seconds ahead of Elias.

Elias then passed baker to take a deserved second place after a strong showing in this year’s event. Third place Baker seemed to have nothing in reserve to chase down Elias and Marquez, and finished 4.5 seconds behind theh winner, having to defend against multiple world Supermoto champion Thomas Chareyre, who eventually crashed while trying to find a way past Baker.

Marquez’s victory means he’s now tied with Baker for wins – each rider has two apiece, which means next year’s event will decide who’s top dog.

Speaking after his win, Marquez said:

'I'm really happy because last year I was really close to victory and this year I got it.

'Last year I know the mistake I did was the first corner. This time I tried to be in a different way and it worked well. Especially the pace was really good. Toni was pushing a lot. the pace this year was maybe the best year for what I feel.

'One of the reasons for this is my team. They arrive here and Santi Hernandez arrived like a MotoGP race, with everything with him. [He said] "OK, last year you put the tyre here," and we did a really good job. I think everyone enjoyed the party. I'm sorry for Julian Simon and Ricky Cardus. I don't want to forget them because in the end this is like a party. I'm really happy.

'One of the surprises, like I said yesterday, was the level. The level of this race was really, really high. Another thing was all the people were really excited and very aggressive in the first corner.

'There were many crashes so every year it's coming more and more dangerous but it's something that we need to manage. In the end the most important thing is all the people are happy with the final result.'
