Strong starts for Red Bull KTM

THE 2017 Dakar Rally is underway, with the race yesterday leaving Paraguay’s capital city of Ascencion for Resistencia in Argentina as the first stage commenced following a short special stage.

The Red Bull KTM Factory team have got off to a strong start with at this years’ race, with Matthias Walker and Sam Sunderland both posting top 10 finishes and last year’s winner Toby Price finishing inside the top 20.

Speaking after the stage, Price said: ‘We got the job done today of starting the rally off in Paraguay. I opened the road today and that’s never easy on a Dakar stage. There was some wildlife out on the stage so I had to be careful to avoid that.’

Yamaha-mounted Frenchman Xavier de Soultrait, who withdrew in 2016, took victory on the first special stage victory ahead of two Sherco TVS rider Juan Pedrero and Honda rider Ricky Brabec.

Michael Metge completed the day's Top 4, and HRC rider Joan Barreda grabbed the 7th best time despite a problem in a ford.
