Cairoli extends championship with dominant performance in Lombardia

Lombardia MXGP race report

By Adam Simpson

ROUND 11 of the 2017 MXGP series took place in Lombardia, Northern Italy this weekend, and the riders not only had to do battle with each other, but with the extreme heat of the relentless Italian sun.

To the delight of the home crowd, local hero Antonio Cairoli was on top form, and managed to take an early lead by getting the Fox Holeshot in both heats. The Italian was forced to fend off multiple challenges from fellow Red Bull KTM rider Jeffrey Herlings, making for some nail-biting racing which had the crowd on their feet all afternoon. In the end it appeared that the sizzling heat got the better of Herlings, where as the Sicilian born Cairoli seemed to revel in the rays and made holding off The Bullet look like just another day at the office.

In the post-race press conference Cairoli said: “I did my best, I gave 100%, everything I had, and we had a good race. I’m happy to see all the people who came to support me and even after 14 years people still come to see me, it’s amazing.”

After taking the overall win in style, Cairoli has now extended his championship lead to 67 points ahead of Gautier Paulin, currently in second.

In the MX2 class, Switzerland's Jeremy Seewer managed to confidently get round the top four riders to take the win in the first heat with a substantial 12 second lead. A second place finish in heat two would earn the determined Suzuki rider his third overall win of the season.

After a frustrating 6th place finish in heat one and an inspiring win in heat two, Current MX2 championship leader Paul's Jonas came in second overall. This allowed Seewer to close the championship lead by 10 points, leaving only 38 points between him and Jonas heading into the next round in Portugal on 2nd of July.
