London Mayor Sadiq Khan unveils ULEZ expansion due later this year

THE London Mayor Sadiq Khan has unveiled a plan to extend the current Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) from the North Circular Road (A406) to the South Circular Road (A205).

The ULEZ currently covers central London, taking in Southwark, Lambeth, Westminster, Mayfair, Soho, and Clerkenwell. The Mayor’s plan, which is confirmed on the TfL website, will see the ULEZ increase to cover an area 18 times larger. It will stretch from Ealing in the west, Barking in the east, Dulwich in the south, and Tottenham in the north.

The change will come into effect from the 25^th of October 2021, and the charges for traveling into the ULEZ will remain the same as before. That means that motorcycles, cars, vans, and other specialist vehicles will either need to meet the ULEZ emissions standards or pay a £12.50 daily charge when driving within the expanded ULEZ zone.

Speaking of the change, Mr Khan said:

“Today I am reaffirming my commitment to speed up the cleaning of London’s toxic air. In central London, the Ultra-Low Emission Zone has already helped cut toxic roadside nitrogen dioxide pollution by nearly half and led to reductions that are five times greater than the national average. 

“There is no time to waste. We know pollution hits the poorest Londoners the hardest, which is why I’m doing everything I can to improve the health for all Londoners.”
