BMW Motorrad targets Indian market

"We are very keen to enter India and an announcement will be made soon"

INDIA'S Commonwealth Games may be descending into an utter fiasco but that's not stopping German motorcycle manufacturer BMW from having a second attempt at unleashing its products onto the Indian market.

The company tried to break into India's lucrative two-wheel market almost 13 years ago, in a joint venture with the Hero group. This time BMW will go it alone, pushing machines onto the luxury bike market.

Boosted by the success of its luxury four-wheelers in India, the German giant is planning to introduce a selection of the company's motorcycle range, with an official announcement expected over the next few days.

Speaking to India Business Hour on India's CNBC-TV18, Andreas Schaff, President, BMW India, said:

“Motarrads, our motorcycle company, is a core BMW group firm which sees a huge potential in India. We are very keen to enter India and an announcement will be made soon. We are studying the market right now.”

It's anticipated BMW will export fully-built machines into India, with a view to building a production plant over the coming months.
