With a ‘Dave Day’ planned for 8 June, National Highways is urging motorists to be extra vigilant and exercise caution and consideration, as an expected 15,000 bikers are expected to flood Cumbria.

Much loved member of motorcycle riding cooker show, The Hairy Bikers, Dave Myers passed away in February this year after a lengthy battle with cancer. Dave Day is a charity fundraising event, culminating in a motorcycle ride from London to Barrow, a concert at Craven Park, an afternoon of entertainment outside Barrow Town Hall, and an appearance from Si King, Myers’ Hairy Biker colleague and close friend, and Dave’s wife Liliana.

The event is expected to bring together tens of thousands of bikers and fans of the TV show alike, and because of this National Highways has taken the step to update motorway signage on the M6 to help keep riders safe. Junction 36 on the M6 and the A590 leading directly into Barrow - where Dave was born and raised - are presumed to be two areas which will be getting extremely busy, and National Highways is calling on all motorists to be extra vigilant and to drive with consideration and caution, especially at junctions.

Aside from the National Highways input, Westmorland and Furness Council is working with groups including emergency services and highways bodies to ensure public safety and to minimise community impact as a result of the day’s events. This will include arranging road closures around the town hall where it is expected large crowds will gather in the afternoon and allowing some of its car parks to be used by the visiting motorcyclists.
