URS sidecar smashes expectations at £102,700

Bonhams auction comes up trumps at Stafford County bike show

A VINTAGE URS racing motorcycle and sidecar has fetched a staggering £102,700 at Bonhams auction during last weekend's Classic Motorcycle Mechanics Show.

The machine, ridden by the legendary Helmut Fath when he won the Sidecar World Championship in 1968, was expected to command between £70,000 - £80,000 at Bonhams annual sale of collectors’ motorcycles and related memorabilia.

The URS was part of a UK private collection, which also included the 500cc URS-engined Seeley prototype John Blanchard rode to 4th place in the 1967 Ulster Grand Prix. The machine, also ridden by Tony Jefferies, topped its £60,000 – 70,000 estimation, selling for £76,300.
