No jail for death crash driver

Community service for man who admitted causing death of motorcyclist

A MOTORIST who admitted causing the death of a motorcyclist in a head-on collision has walked free from court.

Daniel Nelis, 48, collided head-on with motorcyclist Keith Everett after crossing into the oncoming traffic lane on a coastal road near Skelmorlie, Ayreshire, July 2009. Mr Everett was taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital but died the following day from serious injuries sustained in the crash.

Earlier this month, Nelis, from Tantallon Avenue, Gourock, admitted causing death by careless driving when he appeared at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court.

Despite the seriousness of the case, Nelis escaped jail and was instead handed a community service order.
