New Year's Eve record jump planned

Robbie Maddison aiming for 400ft

AUSTRALIAN rider Robbie Maddison is hoping to break the distance jump record with a 400ft-plus leap on New Year's Eve as part of the Red Bull: New Year. No Limits event.

Both he and snowmobile stunter Levi LaVallee will be attempting the same distance on their very different machines, jumping over a 300ft water gap on San Diego Bay.

Maddison has, in the past, set previous distance jumping records (322ft in 2007), jumped 96ft up onto the top of the Arc de Triomphe replica at Paris Las Vegas and backflipped across the open drawbridge of London's Tower Bridge.

LaVallee originally intended to break the snowmobile jump record a year ago, but crashed in practice during a massive 360ft jump at over 100mph. Despite a fractured pelvis and two collapsed lungs, he hasn't been put off.

Well, it makes a change from the usual drunken 'Happy New Year' text messages and slurred choruses of Auld Lang Syne the rest of us will be experiencing.
