MotoGP: Stoner fastest in first Donington practice

Championship leader sets the pace at a wet Donington

CASEY Stoner set the fastest pace in this morning's MotoGP practice session at Donington Park.

The circuit has patches of standing water following hours of heavy rain. The hour-long session was a very wet affair, despite the sun making an appearance with a few minutes to go.

Stoner posted a best time of 1:43.749 and surprisingly, Nicky Hayden was second quickest, with a time of 1:43.781 - just 0.032 seconds off Stoner's hot lap.

Vermeulen took a tumble coming onto the straight early on in the session but recovered well, banging out times that had him at the top of the leaderboard, but at the end of the session he was fourth.

New boy, Anthony West was also at the top of the time sheets, early on in the session when the weather was at its worst. West is know as being a wet-weather guru, so if the conditions stay the same all weekend, West could make an amazing entry to the class. His final time was a credible eighth place, two places behind Valentino Rossi.
