Jersey to slow down?

Reduced speed limits planned

DESPITE having has a maximum speed limit of just 40mph on the island, recent figures show that Jersey's serious road injury rate is actually higher than that of the UK.

As a result, new 20mph and 30mph zones have been proposed in Jersey, with the aim of increasing safety around the St Brelade, St Helier, St John, St Mary, St Peter, Trinity and Grouville areas.

Transport Minister, Deputy Kevin Lewis says, "Lowering a speed limit in an appropriate place is one of a range of measures that can help make our roads safer and which I therefore believe needs to be part of our road safety strategy."

Roads in the proposed areas have been selected due to concerns from both residents and parish Constables. The Transport and Technical Services department is currently consulting the public for their thoughts on the matter.
