Isle of Man: McGuinness notches up 12th TT victory

TT gets underway with superb Superbike race

John McGuinness notched up his 12th TT victory by winning this year's Superbike race in illustrious style. The 34-year-old Lancastrian dominated the race from the start, which had been postponed from Saturday due to bad weather. The HM Plant-sponsored rider set a blistering pace on the opening lap, breaking the existing Superbike lap record the following lap. McGuinness made the win look relatively effortless, leading the trailing pack by 36 seconds at one point. His victory gave Honda their 131st win at the Island, with Fireblades dominating the first six places.

"I went at it straight from the off and felt really comfortable from the word go. I've been training hard over the last few months and it showed, as I feel really fresh - even after six laps. The bike was absolutely awesome and the pit crew were spot on.

"The crowd were fantastic, too. Creg ny Ba was packed and everyone was cheering and waving on the last lap. I wanted to stand up and wave back but didn't want to tempt fate. It was all quite emotional."

Guy Martin notched up an impressive second place, coasting in 25 seconds behind McGuinness and would probably have done better if his pit stops had been smoother but he looked chuffed with second place all the same.

McGuinness' HM Plant Honda team mate, Ian Hutchinson, came in third to claim a rostrum place. He said he wasn't committed enough from the start, and was weary of a few damp patches around the course that caused him to hold back.

One thing's for sure: judging how smooth McGuinness rode it looks like there's plenty left in reserve, which means Friday's 6-lap Senior should be an absolute belter. The Superstock race is scheduled for this coming Tuesday, giving the riders a chance to get fully dialled in before Friday.
