First 'Better Junction' scrapped

Victory for Motorcycle Action Group over perilous junction plans

PLANS by Transport For London for a new 'super' junction at Lambeth North roundabout have been defeated during consultation.

The planned changes at the busy roundabout, one of 100 targeted in TFL's £900 million 'Better Junctions' scheme, would (it was argued) have made it significantly more dangerous for motorcyclists.

The proposals were aimed at improving safety for cyclists. However, members of the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) successfully argued that similar considerations were not being made for riders of PTWs (powered two wheelers).

MAG pointed out that existing hatched areas serve as a refuge for motorcyclists, and that paving over them would 'reduce safety'.

Although this is just one of many proposals that may similarly impact motorcyclists (not least the other 99 'Better Junctions'...), bikers in the nation's capital will be hoping that this victory may begin redressing the balance between consideration of the interests of cyclists and motorcyclists by TFL.
