Electric bike hits 166mph in new speed record

Lightning Motorcycles machine pips Mission One to new electric speed record

AN ELECTRIC prototype motorcycle has achieved a top speed of 267.776 kph (166.388 mph) during the SCTA World Finals at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

The bike was constructed by Lightning Motorcycles, an American electric bike specialist. The 166mph record, set by Paul Thede from Race Tech, during the world famous Speed Week Time Trials, makes the machine the world's fastest production electric bike.

Lightning's machine is powered by lithium ion batteries and a GM EV1 electric car motor.

The record was last held by Mission Motors, who set an official record speed of 241.5 kph (150.059 mph) on their Mission One machine.
