The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced strict new measures to curb movement in the United Kingdom targeted at slowing the spread of the coronavirus.

In an evening address from Downing Street [Monday 23 March], PM Johnson announced people must stay at home unless they are shopping for basic necessities, daily exercise, medical needs, care for vulnerable person and travelling to and from essential work (unable to work from home).

Shops selling non-essential goods (food, medical supplies) have been ordered to shut as of tonight with gatherings of more than two people who do not live together in public not permitted.

The ruling supersedes the measures introduced on Friday when travel restrictions were not put in place. In the motorcycling context, this allowed people to venture out on their bikes in solo, albeit discouraged from riding in groups.

However, on a weekend of good weather it was clear the suggestions were not heeded with large crowds venturing out and congregating in public places.

As a result, the new measure – effective as of now for the next three weeks – means group riding is officially banned and solo riding must now only take place for the essential means as stated above.

Those who do not observe the new rules will face potential fines or worse as police are given new powers to enforce them.

“We will look again in three weeks, and relax them if the evidence shows we are able to,” PM Johnson said in his address.

"Without a huge national effort to halt the growth of this virus, there will come a moment when no health service in the world could possibly cope; because there won't be enough ventilators, enough intensive care beds, enough doctors and nurses,"

As previously stated, no person should leave the home if they are exhibiting even one of the following symptoms; a dry persistent cough, a high temperature and a fever.

IMPORTANT: If you DO need to venture out on your motorcycle, ride safely and in a way that will not result in injury and potentially add extra burden to the NHS

On Monday the UK death toll rose to 335 people, but there are fears the nation hasn’t experienced the worst of the virus’ spread.
