Brough Superior breaks sales record at £315,000

SS100 Alpine Grand Sports beat previous record set by Brough Superior SS80

A 1929 Brough Superior became the most expensive of its kind to sell at public auction when it went for £315,100 yesterday.

The SS100 Alpine Grand Sports, which went under the hammer at Bonham’s Bond Street Sale, beat the previous record set by a Brough Superior SS80 of £291,200.

Paul d’Orleans, a vintage motorcycle expert, said: ‘George Brough was a genius of motorcycle design, and the SS100 is his masterpiece,

‘It’s no surprise his machines fetch such prices.

‘Each was sold with a certificate guaranteeing it has been timed at over 100mph at the Brooklands racetrack.

‘No other motorcycle was sold with such a claim, and this was a remarkable speed for a road bike in the 1920s.’

The Brough's namesake, the Alpine Trial, was a gruelling reliability run started in 1910. Taking in mountain peaks, chilling temperatures, and the twists and turns of Austria, Croatia, Slovenia and the infamous Stelvio Pass, it was a test of endurance and skill.

George Brough undertook the Trial in 1925 on an SS100, resulting in the award of six cups, including one for 'Best Performance’.

The design of the Brough Superior Alpine Grand Sports took inspiration from its founder's achievement, and was introduced to the market in 1925 for the 1926 season, with a lower compression ratio, a small fly-screen and a pair of tool boxes as standard.

The British marque recently unveiled a new SS100 powered by a 997cc V-twin making a claimed 100-140hp depending on ECU settings. It’s Brough’s first new model in 73 years and is anticipated to cost around £50,000.
