BMW scooter spied testing in Munich

BMW to launch maxi scooter as soon as this November

WORD from Germany is that BMW's forthcoming big scooters – due to be launched in November and go on sale next year – have been spotted out on the roads near the firm's Munich factory.

Although no pictures have emerged yet, don't be surprised if someone snaps the new bikes soon. We understand there are two versions, both powered by the same parallel twin engine. Few details have been officially confirmed but we're expecting the capacity to be around 650cc. The styling is reckoned to be recognisably similar to the “Concept C”, first shown last year, but with some of the wackier elements – like the blue tyres – toned down for production.

A recent patent from BMW, apparently relating to the firm's new scooter, also reveals some clever shenanigans with the bike's under-seat storage. It shows a floor section under the seat which can be lowered when the bike is stationary, dropping the storage box's floor down until it sits on the top of the rear tyre. The idea, apparently, is to free up extra space when the bike is parked so there's room for two helmets under the seat. Presumably there will be some sort of interlock to make sure you can't ride off with the storage box in its extended position.
