Dog walker gets a shock at Weston

A Weston-super-Mare man got more than he bargined for from his Sunday walk

A DOGWALKER got a nasty shock on Sunday when he found himself in the middle of the biggest beach race in Europe.

The man and his dog found themselves on the Weston Beach Race straight, where more than 500 off-road riders hit speeds of 100mph along the seafront.

A race marshal on a quad bike quickly arrived to assist the hapless walker and his dog, guiding them swiftly to safety. Strangely, pedestrian access to Weston-super-Mare beach is blocked off for the Beach Race weekend...

The three-day event, which celebrated its 30th birthday this weekend is heralded as the biggest beach enduro in Europe.

Around 1,150 riders took part in the event - 400 bikers pitting their wits for the main race on Sunday along the 5.2-mile course. The course itself features roughly 200,000 tonnes of sand, perilous sand dunes and a 2.5 kilometre straight where the dogwalker came unstuck.
