2016 Triumph Tiger Explorer debuts

Actually there are six of them: the XC, XCx, XCa, XR, XRx and XRt

TRIUMPH'S biggest adventure bike, the Tiger Explorer 1200, just got the same multi-edition treatment as the Tiger 800, with six new brand-new versions catering for trail and touring tastes.

There are no less than six versions – an XC, XCx, XCa, XR, XRx and XRt.

As with the Tiger 800 range, the XR series models are more road-biased while XC denotes more off-road potential. The XCx, XCa, XRx and XRt benefit from electronics packages including semi-active suspension, 'corner-optimised' swicthable ABS and traction control.

Like Yamaha's R1, they use an inertial measurement unit that calculates lean angle and optimises the ABS and traction control accordingly.

There are five riding modes in total and a 'hill hold control' feature that stops the bike rolling backward.

The base-model XC and XR get adjustable WP suspension

All versions use the same 1215cc triple engine, with a shaft drive. Full specifications have yet to be released but Triumph says it's a new engine with more power and a linear torque curve across the rev range.

It's got a 'torque-assisted' clutch for a light lever and a new exhaust system with a 'distinctive resonant note' according to Triumph.

There are low-seat variants and it's gained an electrically adjustable screen, which Triumph says is a 'first-in-class'.

Triumph's release on the bike said: 'The Explorer features a new engine with more power, improved handling, rider and active rider-focused technology packaged in a family of bikes with a contemporary look and style that are distinctly their own. Featuring sharp new lines that give a stylish and muscular look combined to deliver enhanced rider and passenger thermal comfort. Additionally, all models introduce a first-in-class electrically adjustable screen that allows the rider to constantly tailor aero protection and comfort whilst riding.
