The notoriously challenging sand track of Lommel in Belgium hosted round 14 of the MXGP series this weekend, and was another belter for Red Bull KTM as they dominated the podiums in both the MX2 and MXGP classes.
Here's a rundown of the results.
MXGP
Race one of the MXGP class saw Red Bull KTM Team riders Tony Cairoli, Glen Coldenhoff and Jeffrey Herlings battle for the top positions while the rest of the field did what they could to play catch-up.
Herlings displayed total dominance in the sand, overtaking Cairoli early on before making a solid pass on Coldenhoff on lap six. This allowed the Dutchman to pull away from the rest of the field and give himself a comfortable lead.
Current championship points leader Cairoli managed to pass Coldenhoff for second place. He then made a mistake which let Coldenhoff past again, only to re-take his team-mate to finish second.
Race two saw Cairoli earn his second Fox Holeshot of the day, but again he was unable to pull away.
Race one winner Jeffrey Herlings was hot on his heels and gunning for a 1-1. Although Herlings made an early pass on Cairoli, the two carried on banging bars for the majority of the race, much to the delight of the cheering Belgian fans. In the end it was the sand master Herlings who came out on top, leaving Cairoli to settle for second.
Race two went well for Britain's Max Anstie, who finished in a solid third place ahead of Glen Coldenhoff.
“I had a really good weekend” Herlings said in the press conference. “I won yesterday, won both motos today, and I had a pretty good start last race, I’m happy with that. It was clean racing and I enjoyed it, I’m happy a got the better of him (Cairoli) this weekend.”
MX2
The MX2 class was also completely dominated by Red Bull KTM riders, after Jorge Prado Garcia grabbed the Fox Holeshot in race one.
Unfortunately for Prado, an epic charge from his team-mate Pauls Jonass was taking place behind him. It saw Jonass go from fifth to second in the first four laps. Jonass later made the pass on Prado and checked out to take the win.
A pile-up in the first corner saw race one winner Pauls Jonass on the floor as Husqvarna rider Thomas Covington took the Fox Holeshot ahead of Jorge Prado Garcia.
Prado then made an epic pass on Covington by gapping the big quad jump to take the lead in style.
Covington had a big off later in the race and was not able to finish. That left Prado to comfortably bring home the win ahead of Belgium's Julien Lieber in second, and Thomas Kjer Olsen in third, making it a KTM 1-2-3 overall.
"I’m feeling pretty happy, you know it is pretty difficult to win a GP,” said Prado in the press conference following the race. “Everybody is riding really fast so it is hard work. This weekend the track was pretty tough and you really have to give it your all, which I did."
Round 15 of the championship will take place next weekend at the MXGP of Switzerland.
