Best route France > Italy > Swiss > germany

Hi all,

I'm off to a mates wedding in Sion, Switzerland on the 10th April, want to call at a mates on the way south of Lyon, then thinking to cross into Italy then back over alps to Switzerland. Head back thru Germany and maybe the ring on way home.

I've never ridden in Europe before, and I just want to get some ideas from people who've done it on bikes which are great roads to experience on the way not to mention which to avoid! Fairly happy to do most of France on the autoroute to eat up the miles a bit unless there's some stunners. Bout 10 days to do it...

I'm riding an SV1000 SZ so fairly sporty...

Thanks for any help!

Do I know you from another place?   Any way. What you have in mind is no problem from what I can see. The only thing is Switzerland. They have a venerate system. You buy a ticket to use there road's. Never been in Switzerland, tended to ride round it for that reason. As for the higher pass's, think you will find some of them still closed due to snow. But have a look before you go, or ask your mate when you get to Sion. That is going to be your only problem. Going in and out of Italy. Either through Switzerland or Austria, to get to Nuremberg.  Apart from that wish you well. John933

John993, don't you only need the vignette to ride on toll roads? they are 40euros and can be purchased before travelling or at petrol stations/border crossings. http://europerides.com/rideblog/?page_id=84, check before you go, as mentioned previously the higher passes might still be closed. Download a program called Tyre, it will allow you to pre plan your route and as you do so you can check you tube, google earth etc to look at the roads before you go.

Big thanks to everyone, should be a nice adventure! Esp as just invested in a pair of new gortex alpinestars boots to replace my 10 year old sides!
Looking at map I can always go to chamonix and up into Switzerland from there rather than big detour through italy

You may be right. As I said I have no idea , as I don't ride Switzerland. It's just what I read and see on other board's. If I'm going that way. It's down France and then cross in to Italy. John933

I'm also planning on doing a similar route and could use a co-tourer, unfortunately I'm not going at the same time as you. In early August I'm heading from Frankfurt down the autobahn to the Black Forest Furka Pass (Swizterland) Albula Pass (Swiss) etc. and more passes  and then possibly a coffee break in Milan before heading to Port Antico in Genoa along the coast to Monaco return North for more swiss alps back to the black forest autobahn to Frankfurt  just in time to return my rental ... in the span of 7 days of course.  I feel like I'm more attracted to Switzerland and all their high elevation mountain roads. As well as the black forest, where I may spend most of my time.   Theres too many good roads to name on your route but you can have a quick look here at most of em' http://www.motorbikeeurope.com/en/routes-category/top100 Using YouTube vids to help me pick out which roads I should program into my GPS ex. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEOeM7QJiU4 Main goal of the trip is to hit up as many good driving roads as possible only stopping for good views, good food, and sleep.  My main concern though was what I would use for a GPS and Tyre seems like a good way to go, so thanks for that. I do know that I require an International license to travel through countries on bike, and I'm curious as to what fees the Swiss have imposed.

You only need a vignette if you use the motorways in Switzerland, We always hoon down the toll roads in France and through the Mont Blanc Tunnel, then take your pick on the pass you want to do, last year we done the Splugen Pass video Splugen Pass but we were coming at it from Lake Como. All the details of our trip are on my blog under Italy 2014 in there are route maps and the hotels we stayed in...

Sorry I had pasted a spread sheet in but it has not worked. You can still see the hotels we used. Put then in to a route planner and see if any are usful.
