10 races to see in your lifetime

Racing events from across the globe that need experiencing not just for the action on the track but for stories that come away from them

Mugello

It's important to make it to this event whilst Valentino Rossi is still racing as the circuit embodies the Italian's legion of Rossi-ites. Next year, when he’s mounted on a Bologna-built Ducati should be absolutely insane. There is something special about the Mugello circuit which is set in the luscious rolling hills of Italy, the track takes full advantage of the natural lay of the land with fantastic chicanes and fast, sweeping corners. The viewing is legendary.

Indy Mile

Indy Mile

The Indianapolis dust bowl plays host to the Crown Jewel of flat track racing. For the spectators, the brain-out fast Indy Mile offers race-long sideways action and 18 riders racing bar-to-bar. Also the race now coincides with the MotoGP round at Indianapolis so you can hit two types of racing at these legendary circuits.

Paris-Bercy Supercross

Paris-Bercy Supercross

Probably one of the only races that combines wild arena supercross racing with mad chainsaw wielding Frenchmen. This race occurs before the AMA Supercross season kicks off so a lot of the top American riders use the Paris-Bercy SX event as a warm-up to their indoor season.

Macau

Macau

The Monaco of the Far East with superbikes rather than the yachts and real characters rather than the chinless Ruperts of the F1 car World (Coulthard and Schumacher excepted). At the Macau street race  you'll find riders grazing the walls as they attempt to edge ahead of their opponents to find that extra thousandth of a second. This crazy event is one of its kind where you'll often find the top flight real road racers clash against the best short circuit circuit riders.

Monza

Monza

Monza is a circuit with a long and somewhat tragic history, taking the lives of racers including Jarno Saarinen and Renzo Pasolini. The track is fast and full of action with high speed straights connected by fast chicanes. If you can, try and sneak on to the photographer’s platform at the Parabolica to get a true understanding of this long sweeping right hander. You must also visit the eerie, viciously steep and lethal banked circuit that is crumbling away in the forest.

Isle of Man TT

Isle of Man TT

The Isle of Man TT is more than a race, it's a mass exodus to an island to celebrate the greatness of two wheels for a fortnight. Where else can you watch the heroic displays from the riders and then ride the same tarmac after them? Mad Sunday also provides a different kind of entertainment and Douglas promenade on a Sunday is a proper freak fest.

Le Mans 24hr

Le Mans 24hr

Le Mans has a Fiesta atmosphere with the opportunity to spend an enduring 24 hours looning around whilst the racers are testing themselves mentally and physically over the punishing endurance race. Alternative(something of an understatement) entertainment is provided by the various oddballs such as the bearded lady and the snake charmer. Expect unsilenced V8s mounted in shopping trolleys, fire eating, endless burnouts and spectacular drink-fuelled spectator injuries. Unmissable.

Weston Beach

Weston Beach

The beach race at Weston-super-Mare literally features a tide of dirtbikes blasting across the sand. Entries come in at the thousands, from everyday Joes to motocross legends like Stefan Everts, to tackle the gigantic dunes. You'll often find a a dejected rider pushing his bike through a cloud of two-stroke fumes or a discarded bike bellowing smoke.

Suzuka 8hr

Suzuka 8hr

8-hours crammed full of Japanese racing peculiarities and the upper echelon of expensive superbike racing. The race ranks highly with the Japanese manufacturers’. A win at the Suzuka 8hr is just as important as a championship win on the world stage. You’ll also find the crowds the quietest and most polite anywhere in the World. Just a gentle ripple of applause is as rowdy as it gets.

Daytona

Daytona

The Daytona 200 perhaps lacks the same glory as the bygone era when superbikes tackled the super-steep banking rather than the hyped up 600s that race now. Don't let the poor management on behalf of the owners put you off as seeing four riders abreast on the banking is still a sight to behold. And there are tons of fake breasted girls straddling Harleys to be, er, seen.
