A new trademark filed by Aprilia indicates a possible new model of scooter arriving in 2021. The name is eSR1, pointing to a possible new lightweight sports scooter that ruled the roost in the late 90s and 2000s.
The ‘e’ in the name eSR1 though doesn’t indicate a return to the hazy days of two-stroke smokers and illegally fitted big-bore kits, the rumour is that this Aprilia will be electrically powered.
If the machine is indeed an electric scooter, it’ll be the second machine from the Piaggio Group, as its Vespa Electtrica has been on sale for some time now. While there is no official word on the model from Aprilia, it seems sensible that the bike will borrow some of the existing tech already in service on the more classically styled Vespa.
If that does turn out to be the case, the eSR1 could be available in both 30 and 45mph versions, with motors producing either 5 or 8.5bhp.
Along with the filing is an image of the bike’s badge, showing how it could look. When compared to the badge on the current SR petrol-powered scooter, it’s clear that the two bikes will be similar in more than just name alone.
The SR 50 has always been the scooter of choice for those wanting sporty styling and handling dynamics. The exterior of the bike was designed to look like one of Aprilia’s sports bikes, with the centrally mounted air-intake and headlights aping the look of the RSV4 litre sports bike.
