The update will coincide with the model gaining the all-important Euro5 certification although it is clear from the images this is much more than just a re-tune of the LC8 V-twin engine.

The biggest change is with the chassis of the bike and the adoption of a 790 and 890 Adventure style underslung fuel tank. The system means the bike will be able to carry its fuel without negatively impacting the on and off-road handling. It’s a feature of the 790 Adventure that is immediately noticeable and it should make the new 1290 a formidable machine to take on the dirt with.

With the new fuel tank being added, the fairing of the machine has also been updated. It’s a more substantial item than before, and thanks to the new fuel tank it should provide ample protection from the elements.

What the images don’t divulge is what’s going on between the crankcases of the machine. Indeed, we can’t even tell is the engine is the same 1301cc as before. If it is then there will likely be extensive updates to the intake, exhaust, and electronics to help it get around the latest Euro5 reg’s. KTM will also be keen to take the fight to Ducati and the new Multistrada V4. If that happens, this could be the most powerful KTM adventure bike we’ve ever seen.
