2021 will see the return of a bit of a legend to the KTM range, as the 450 SMR track-only supermoto makes a comeback.
After seven years away from the track, the SMR is now piggybacking on the development of the 450 SX-F supercross and motocross machines, and is boasting a 63bhp single-cylinder engine, improved mass centralisation, and updated WP XACT forks and rear shock.

The heart of the 2021 KTM 450 SMR is provided by the highly successful 450cc engine that made the KTM 450 SX-F such a formidable off-road weapon. The latest generation of the unit produces 63hp although amazingly only weighs 27kg. The motor has been located in the frame to improve mass centralisation. With the net result being a claimed improvement in feel and grip on the track.
Underneath the SOHC cylinder head lives the 95mm bore lightweight aluminium cylinder, housing a 320g piston. The crankshaft position has also been tweaked, now benefitting the bike’s centralized handling. Service intervals for the new machine are set at 100 hours.
Helping the SMR get the power to the Tarmac is a PANKL Racing Systems 5-speed gearbox. The system uses an advanced sensor that allows the rider to select specific engine maps for each gear. A Suter slipper clutch is added to enhance rear-wheel stability.
Mechanicals aside, the machine has also been given a new lease of life, with adjustable power modes, which are adaptable for each of the bike’s gears. The bike will also feature launch control and switchable traction control, perfect for transitioning from dirt to Tarmac.
Stopping power, all-important on a supermoto machine is taken care of by Brembo, with a four-piston caliper that’s paired with a 310mm floating disc.
The revised triple clamps, now offering changes of direction, hold 48mm WP XACT front forks that feature AER technology with split damping function, and a mid-valve damping system for improved performance. A WP XACT rear shock offers full adjustability.
The base price for the new 2021 KTM 450 SMR is £9,749.
