The 2020 North West 200 remains on schedule to go ahead in May after seeking advice from health authorities, but says it is monitoring the situation closely.

The event – one of the big dates in the road racing calendar – is scheduled for May 10-16 but like all international motorsport events is currently facing the threat of postponement or cancellation as a result of the widespread coronavirus outbreak.

However, a week after Isle of Man TT organisers moved to allay fears over whether its event will be cancelled, North West 200 organisers say the ‘low impact’ of the outbreak means for now it remains unaffected.

“Following the outbreak of Coronavirus in Northern Ireland, the organisers of the 2020 fonaCAB and Nicholl Oils North West 200 have sought advice from the relevant government and public health officials.

“Dr Michael McBride, Chief Medical Officer for Northern Ireland, has advised that, at this particular time, evidence of benefit from cancelling outdoor sporting events in terms of impact is low.

“We will continue to seek advice and monitor the situation on an ongoing basis as we prepare for 2020 Race Week on May 10-16.”
